Tan y fron Housing Co-op

Tan y fron (tan-uh-vron) is the name of our grade two listed home near Meifod in Powys. It means ‘under the breast’ (of the hill) referring to our location nestled at the foot of a wooded hillside.

Tan y fron is home to a co-op whose roots evolved through permaculture. The co-op formed in 2010, guided by the following permaculture principles: Earth Care, People Care, and Fair Share. We protect the land by toiling to minimise our impact. For instance, we employ closed loop systems like producing humanure, and using grey water drainage and ponds. We support one another, alongside taking on shared and personal responsibilities for our day to day lives. We host volunteers who benefit from learning new skills, and we utilise the space to apply home education activities for residents and guests. Historically, we have formed an XR group and organised non-violent direct actions for climate change protests here. Generally, we function to enhance the co-op for members, visitors and the wildlife living here with us. We also have strong local connections with Pen y lan and Dragons Housing Co-operatives.

Presently, we are made up of seven adults and three younger folk. Additionally, we live with one dog and five cats! We socialise, talk business and share communal dinners in the big house with its slate floors and traditional features. Individual and shared interests include walking, cooking, singing, playing games, writing, woodwork, and learning Cymraeg. We have a family here who are busy home educating. Due to this place’s historical and ecological nature, there is a shared occupational focus on renovations using traditional materials and methods, growing food, raising capital, and enhancing how we operate. We navigate our personal needs and the practical needs of the co-op in an accessible and equitable fashion. Beyond the co-op, we are surrounded by beautiful woodland and local walks. Llanfyllin and Welshpool are ten minutes away. The Powys landscape also has many inspiring community groups and third-sector organisations. We are lucky to be here.
